suburbia

the city
has never left me,
the term         ‘suburbia’      is but
a distant American imaginary,
a blip on the tongue,
a troye sivan song
    back in 2015.

now its strange stillness faces me,
it beats           a slow rhythm
   quiet,
and contemplative –

i hated it.

but posed with a camera,
i found –
there is beauty to nothingness,
the unkempt
            and unattended
the fragments
            and fissures
old signs
            and worn paths.

if you listen closely,
the banal        becomes extraordinary
worthy
of a pause –
the sacred press
   of a shutter.

the city has never left me,
but there is freedom to be found
in vastness/
in solitude/
in the quiet hum
   of the suburban.
